Registration schemes are in place to ensure a high standard of engineering competence and professional experience.
Engineering registration is currently being implemented at various stages across Australia and New Zealand. Our team holds all relevant registrations required to undertake engineering works in compliance with applicable state and federal regulations.

Australia
Currently registration requirements in Australia are governed by State legislation and vary across the country.
The primary engineering certification body Engineers Australia have implemented a nation-wide registration scheme which is recognised by the individual state authorities. This scheme is yet to be adopted on a federal level, registration with each individual state is required. Trenchless Engineering Australia’s Principal Engineer holds the below Engineers Australia qualifications:
- National Engineering Registration (NER)
- Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng)
Queensland – Required
Mandatory engineering registration has been in place in Queensland since 1929.
Registration of qualified engineers is required across all industries, for both projects in QLD or by companies based in QLD. The RPEQ register is maintained by the Board of Professional Engineers of Queensland.
All trenchless projects in QLD require designs to be completed by a certified RPEQ engineer. Trenchless Engineering Australia’s Principal Engineer holds RPEQ status.
New South Wales
Engineering registration in NSW has commenced roll out, currently it is only required across the building industry.
Trenchless projects do not currently require NSW registration, however some asset owners may require NER signoff.
Victoria – Required
Engineering registration has been in place since 2021 and applies to all industries. The register is maintained by the Business Licensing Authority (BLA).
All trenchless projects in Victoria require designs to be completed by a certified Professional Engineer. Trenchless Engineering Australia’s Principal Engineer holds Victorian PE status.
Western Australia – In Progress
Western Australia registration is currently being rolled out, stay tuned for more information 🙂
Trenchless projects do not currently require WA registration, however some asset owners may require NER signoff including Water Corporation and Main Roads Western Australia.
Australian Capital Territory – Required
Engineer registration has been rolled out across all industries in the ACT starting March 2024 with full compliance required from March 2025 onwards.
All trenchless projects in the ACT require designs to be completed by a certified Professional Engineer.
Trenchless Engineering Australia’s Principal Engineer holds Mutual Recognition status in the ACT, we do not appear in the online register. Contact us for further details.
South Australia
South Australia registration is currently being rolled out, Phase 1 focuses on Structural and Fire safety for the building industry, stay tuned for more information 🙂
Trenchless projects do not currently require SA registration, however some asset owners may require NER signoff.
Tasmania
Tasmania requires some engineers are licensed in the building industry. Trenchless projects do not currently require Tasmanian registration, however some asset owners may require NER signoff.
Northern Territory
The Northern Territory requires engineers are licensed in some industries. Trenchless projects do not currently require NT registration, however some asset owners may require NER signoff.
New Zealand
The primary engineering certification body Engineering New Zealand have implemented a nation-wide Chartered registration scheme.
There is currently no requirement for engineers in New Zealand to register. However, CPEng (NZ) may be required if work involves signing off consents or certifying work under a New Zealand regulatory regime.
